Hangover II, a definite hangover from the first.

They did it again.  The follow up put a new spin on major motion picture humor.  It would be nearly impossible to match the first, but it is well worth a trip to the theatre.

The boys in the movie are at each others' throats and wits' end again.  They fight, joke, insult and enjoy each others' company as much as always.  They enjoy the company of a drug dealing monkey who apparently loves the male anatomy.  The monkey is easier to work with, but is tougher to appreciate than a tiger in the bathroom.

If you liked the first installment, Hall Pass, Bridesmaids, or any of the titles along this line, take the guys/gals and sit through this one.  It is a duplicate of the first movie, just in Bangkok.  You will laugh and shake your head (should i say turn you head?) throughout Hangover 2.  Stay through the credits.  Hangover 2 will pull only 3 out of 5 Cyclones, but definitely worth seeing, again.

Hangover 2 is coming, I hope this trivia doesn't give you a headache

Mr. Chow has a television series name.

Who is Alan in this movie?

Isn't one of these guys in an office too?

Kung Fu Panda 2.

Ok, I give in. I must say it was a well done kids' movie, well done 3D animation, and it had a story line.

The voices were well done for almost every character (sorry Angelina - a no go) and the it isn't all together necessary to see the first installment to be able to enjoy this second one.

The focus on teamwork is positive for the kids.  The 3D imaging will bring kids and adults together for an amazing visual experience.  The "new" stories are told to fill us in on some of the history of the story and characters.

The downside is the bi-polar feel of the film.  We go from extreme highs to extreme lows within a matter of second.  We are bounced around from story to story, but they end up working themselves out, together.  The laughs are abundant and the action was clean and clear.  I do expect an animation Oscar nomination for this film.  This and Rango are the best so far this year.  Kung Fu Panda 2 will pull 4 out of 5 Cyclones for a good time, even at 10 in the morning on a Saturday.

The Beaver - It's Personal

The Beaver puts an interpersonal twist on mental illness.  Mel Gibson (Walter) is seriously depressed and whacked out.  He acquires a beaver puppet and utilizes it to communicate with himself and others.  Jodie Foster is in standard form, while Mel Gibson made a leap back into a respectable role.

Emotions run high during the film as people recognize the depression and how relevant it is.  The identification with the father/son relationship is real and well played out in this film.  The last straw and ditch efforts to deal with and address the depression and ongoing family frustrations also captures many viewers. Walter's/Beaver's monologues are eyeopening. Get ready.  The art and beaver mediums of communication are similar to our common layman text messaging and music mediums.

Remember, "Everything is going to be OK," in this movie, unless you forget the Kleenex.  The tears will flow for many of you, the laughter will bubble up as well.  Don't expect to leave with much to say, but just scratch your head and self-reflect.  The Beaver is personal from the intro and outro.  The Beaver will pull a surprising 4 out of 5 Cyclones.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (Part 4)

It was good, yes. Worth seeing, yes. Worth seeing in 3D, no. Exciting new cast members, not really. Mermaids, unfortunately, yes.  As good as the others, almost.

Depp is typically wonderful, again.  Cruz falls short of expectations (for those who had some.) The mermaids are disappointing and more disturbing than anything. Things felt a bit more scripted in this round of Depp pirate fun.  We all live for the improvisation and it was there, just not as often. On another note, the CGI was not as keen as expected.

The first hour of the film was slow and fell short, but was made up for in the last half and post-credits fun.  The sword fighting and action was typically enjoyable. Pirate humor is bountiful.  We will probably not get what we had in the first episode, but we will come back for every Pirates installment as they are all worthy fun Disney films.  Disney needed this to redeem their lousy streak this year.

Go see it with the kids and buddies alike.  It will feel like Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Finding Neverland meet up in a series of unique event.  Nobody will blame you for it, and you will walk out with something to talk about.  Might even be more fun with a bit of rum on board.  This two hour eight minute Pirates' movie will earn 3 out of 5 Cyclones.

Priest - god help us.

If you manage to stay awake past the first half of the movie, you are a saint. The lines felt so rehearsed and scripted, they were delivered as awkwardly as the opening scenes of CSI: Miami at times. There was one line to garner applause I can relate to, "If you are not committing any sin, you are not having any fun." as told by a vampire with bad teeth.

The opening was done without too much CGI and it was solid human acting. YES! But the boys then go off to fight Nosferatu and they look (and act) like Ponch and John riding around on their motorcycles. Their fight scenes were so brief and under-developed they almost appeared void of much value.

The motorcycle riding, train scenes, music, and overall production seemed geared towards those with an interest in the comic series. The film isn't scary or entertaining. It is wreaks of disappointment similar to films like Skyline, Waterworld, and Legion. A suggestion would be to stay home, watch the trailer a few times, and call it good. Borrow your buddies Redbox rental in a month and be over it. Priest will pull 2 out of 5 Cyclones for having the decency to be less than an hour and a half long, and for the good looking cast to fill the main roles.

Forks Over Knives - Honest Review

Absolute rubbish.  The movie has no merit or purpose beyond mere propaganda and trying to make people like Michael Moore thin.

We get it, eat more vegetables. But eat less meat and dairy (well actually, eat no dairy and meat) seems silly.  The movie throws up statistics with more skewed bias than the federal government's invasion of Irag for WMD's.  The movie appears to have been created from footage from the 80s, and edited in a buddy's garage.  Very tough to stay awake through this "movie".  In my row of viewers which I could see, 4 were sleeping.  Granted some were a bit obese and they appeared to have run out of popcorn and interest in the film.

I encourage you to get this movie from a bit torrent site and then leave it lying around for someone to steal off your coffee table. Forks Over Knives will pull a courtesy 1 out of 5 Cyclones for at least focusing on something healthy.

Bridesmaids - The Low-Down

Yes, Yes, Yes.  This chick flick is The Hangover meets Hall Pass, for the ladies.  There is more female poop, vomit, foul language, drug use, and sex in this one.  The guys that were in the theatre (with their ladies) left with smiles and an empty bucket of popcorn.

All the actresses were superb.  The improvisation of lines in a movie is always prime material for some genuine laughter.  We got it.  What we don't get is a real unique story.  But we do get an extra half hour of movie that could have been cut without much loss to the overall enjoyment.

With the type of summer movies coming out, this is a perfect "follow up" to Hall Pass, and precursor for "Hangover II".  This is a must see chick flick, and not one for the kids.  If you enjoy potty humor and any sort of wedding, wedding planning, bachelorette party, or genuine fall out of your seat laughter...get to the next screening or theatre when this is released.  If you want a "Jane Eyre" type of story with some depth to it, well just wait for "Jane Eyre" on DVD.

"Bridesmaids" fulfilled its purpose of humor and plenty of fun.  It lacked maturity and depth.  Stick around through the credits for more storyline.  It will pull 4 out of 5 Cyclones.

Jumping the Broom - A review from the critic's side of the fence

Was it worth seeing...yes and no.  The story was typical and predictable.  The maturity level of the movie was at about the junior high level.  It was comparable to Something Borrowed, just a bit darker and with a different level of humor.  Viewers get a standard script and a beautiful setting in the East Coast Vineyard.

Loretta Divine was superb in her standard role.  Angela Bassett choked.  The gentlemen was well rounded and enjoyable in their performances.  This is a movie about social stratification (and upper class status shock) with some middle of the road fun tossed in for laughs.  One lengthy wedding flick to sit through...

There is nothing too notable in this film.  This review is about as stellar as the film.  Laughs, gasps, and a bucket of popcorn are all you are going to get in the theatre.  Don't expect any lasting memories.  "Jumping the Broom" is best for college age adults and above.  It will get 2 out of 5 Cyclones for a decent cast and some good laughs.

Something Borrowed - No more of my time

This movie was a soap opera (or novella for some folks) on steroids.  John Krasinski (from The Office) was awesome and carried the humorous entertainment for the full-term, while Kate Hudson and the true soap star, Colin Egglesfield, were traditionally sub-par.

The movie had more relationships than appropriate.  We are used to films where someone is a '3rd wheel' or maybe a '5th wheel' if there are two couples, but "Something Borrowed" had so many status issues it was nearly an '18 wheeler' driving through the evening's screening.  It was like watching a dog chase it's tail around and around.  You confused reading this yet - try watching the movie.

As for the writing, anytime a movie has the key question and turning point of a movie come down to a question of circumcision, you know there were problems with writing the film. That's right, never before have i experienced this in a movie, until now.

The movie is a love story(ies) for almost two hours.  Some very funny moments, yes.  Some soap opera moments, too many.  Go see the screening May 2nd, and call it good. That should be about enough.  This movie borrowed hours of my time, and I know i am not getting them back.  Don't be a victim like me.  Something Borrowed will pull 2 out of 5 Cyclones.
