The Beaver - It's Personal
The Beaver puts an interpersonal twist on mental illness. Mel Gibson (Walter) is seriously depressed and whacked out. He acquires a beaver puppet and utilizes it to communicate with himself and others. Jodie Foster is in standard form, while Mel Gibson made a leap back into a respectable role.
Emotions run high during the film as people recognize the depression and how relevant it is. The identification with the father/son relationship is real and well played out in this film. The last straw and ditch efforts to deal with and address the depression and ongoing family frustrations also captures many viewers. Walter's/Beaver's monologues are eyeopening. Get ready. The art and beaver mediums of communication are similar to our common layman text messaging and music mediums.
Remember, "Everything is going to be OK," in this movie, unless you forget the Kleenex. The tears will flow for many of you, the laughter will bubble up as well. Don't expect to leave with much to say, but just scratch your head and self-reflect. The Beaver is personal from the intro and outro. The Beaver will pull a surprising 4 out of 5 Cyclones.
